    Description

Antique Mahogany Cased U.S.L.S. Keuffel & Esser sextant..
This K&E model 5223B sextant’s serial number 17796 dates it to 1909. The U.S.L.S. mark stamped on the box probably stands for the United States Lake Survey, whose mission was to perform hydrographic surveys along the northern border between the U.S. and Canada, as well as several other inland waterways.
All of the lenses, mirrors, and adjustments on this beautiful old sextant are in good shape and work well. According to the attached adv. The gun metal sextant measures “angles up to 130 degrees. Radius 6 in., gradations on solid silver to 20minutes, vernier reading to 30 seconds...”.
The polished mahogany case, with brass fittings is solid and in great shape. It is specifically designed to hold the sextant steady and secure when the case is closed. The brass locking clamps hold the lid closed when carrying the box by its brass handle. There is a lock, but no key. There is a brass K & E plaque on the front of the box and a smaller ivory or plastic one on the inside.
This sextant and box are a great example of early 20
    th
century scientific instruments manufactured in the United States.
