    Description

SS DOLLY MADISON: Liberty Ship first day cover postmarked at Kansas City, MO on January 27, 2019. Color printed cachet #9836 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS. Cover franked with two 15 cent small Dolly Madison stamps # 1822 and 55 cent flag stamp (FDOI).
This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was named in her honor. The vessel was delivered on October 14, 1943 by the J.A. Jones Construction Co. in Panama City, FL. The proud new vessel transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II. The ship also carried commercial cargo under five different names until November 15, 1964 when she sprang a hull leak and sank at sea.
This cover honors the famous first lady. She was excellent hostess at the White House, and helped the architect restore the Executive Mansion after it was burned by the British soldiers during the War of 1812.
