Description
SS HARVEY CUSHING memorial Liberty Ship cover postmarked at Cleveland, Ohio on August 16, 2011. Blue printed portrait on cachet #5950 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS. Cover franked with 45 cent Dr. Harvey Cushing and 55 cent flag stamp (FDOI).This 441' merchant cargo ship was named for Dr. Cushing and built in Jacksonville, FL and delivered 11 November 1943. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II. the vessel survived the war, was sold private in 1947, renamed
SS Eretto
, ran aground off Sakhalin Islands on 20 September 1965, broke in two, refloated by USSR, probably scrapped.

Doctor Harvey W. Cushing, was honored in 1943 with the naming of the 411' Liberty Ship SS Harvey Cushing. Harvey Cushing MD, born April 8, 1869 in Cleveland, Ohio. This vessel was built by St. John's River Shipbuilding Co. in Jacksonville, Florida. Doctor Cushing was a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Medical School and did a residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is considered the father of modern neurosurgery.
