Description
HAVERFORD VICTORY WW II Victory Ship memorial first day coverwith postmark from Kansas City, MO. dated January 27, 2019. Color
printed photo cachet #9710 of an underway Victory Ship by Alvin
Eckert USCS #9964. The merchant cargo ship was built by the
Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard at Baltimore in 1944, and launched
on June 20, 1945. The ship was named for Haverford College in
Haverford, Pennsylvania and is part of a group of 150 Victory
Ships that were named for US Colleges and Universities.
Haverford was a women's college, but is now co-ed.
The proud new vessel transported troops to overseas US and Allied Forces during WW II.
She was sold to a private firm in 1947 and carried commercial cargo under three
different names until 13 Nov 1968 when she was forced into Durban, SA with machinery
damage and was detained for debt. Sold by authorities in 1970 and under name Tien Tai
and r
ecords show the vessel was sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1972.
Cover franked with 3 cent Merchant Marine stamp and 1946 and a 55 cent flag stamp (FDOI).
The cover was prepared on a un-gummed, archive quality envelope.
