Description

Authentic Japanese Samue Jacket and Pants Set.
The set was purchased new at the Morikami Japanese Museum.
There were no hang tags on it.
CONDITION:
The samue is in good unworn condition.
It is wrinkled from storage and it has lint.
The color is a dark indigo navy blue.
It is not as light as it appears in my photos
.
There are no smoke odors and no pet odors.
PRODUCT DETAILS:
The Jacket
has two sets of ties.
One set ties inside the jacket and the other set ties outside the jacket.
There is one outside pocket on the left front of the jacket.
The pants have both elastic and a drawstring at the waist.
The hems have elastic. The waist and hem can stretch.
There are two pockets on the sides of the pants.
The fabric is lightweight and 100% Cotton.
The size on the jacket is
F which stands for free size, or one size.
I have measured the jacket with it tied as loosely as possible.
The measurements below are the maximum size of the jacket when it is tied.
It may be tied tighter to accommodate a smaller size.
The jacket may also be worn open (untied) over a shirt for a different look.
The Samue is a unisex garment meant to be worn roomy for a comfortable fit.

THE JAPANESE SAMUE:
Samue (作務衣) is the work clothing of Japanese Zen Buddhist monks.
It is worn when engaged in samu.
Made from cotton or linen and traditionally dyed brown or indigo to
distinguish them from formal vestments,
samue are worn by monks of most Japanese Buddhist traditions.
Samue is worn performing labour duty such as temple maintenance and field work.
In modern times Samue has become popular as general casual or work wear.
Shakuhachi players today, because of the instrument's historical association
with Zen Buddhism, sometimes wear samue.
Samu means everyday work and e means clothing.
Originally worn by working monastics, samu-e have become popular
with artists, students, and practitioners of all paths.
The lightweight fabric and roomy design offer freedom of movement,
making it ideal for work, study, or relaxing around the house.
