    SS JOHN MUIR: Offered is a Liberty Ship first day cover postmarked at Liberty, MO on June 15, 2020. Color printed cachet #1139 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS. Cover franked with a 5 cent John Muir commemorative stamp (Sc#1245) on a 55 cent flag gummed stamped envelope # U-700 (FDOI).  Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift!
    SS John Muir: This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was named in his honor. The vessel was delivered on 31 December 1942 by the Marinship Corp.in Sausalito, CA. The ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II. The vessel also carried commercial cargo until 1966 when she was sold to be recycled for scrap metal.
    John Muir: he helped save Yosemite from development and founded the Sierra Club. He started a movement to preserve special wilderness areas and made citizens more aware of environmental issues. He also explored Alaska. His home in Martinez, CA is open to the public, administered by the National Park Service.
