Description
Two fascinating late 19th century leatherbound pocket diaries owned by Martha Manning of Andover Massachusetts! Each roughly 3.5 by 2" Purple example was made in 1873 but used briefly by Manning in 1887. Contains just 12 pages of enters of letters written and money spent on things like boots at 45 cents, slop jar 65 cents, and car tickets 80 cents. Brown leather example contains entries for each day of the year 1890, including weather, sermons preached at church, "coasting" to friends' houses, visits, deaths, and daily routines. Last several pages include a ledger of receipts for ice cream for 2 for 20 cents, ticket to Groton, 93 vents, sleeve protectors, fur cape .00, etc. Manning later married a Reverend Disbrow after he graduated from the seminary. She appears to have briefly worked as a teacher in the town. A great glimpse of Andover 130+ years ago. Buyer to pay .95 priority shipping in the US; less than 1 pound priority international.
