The subject of this piece is The Temple of Hercules Victor or Hercules Olivarius is a Roman temple in Piazza Bocca della Verità, in the area of the Forum Boarium close to the Tiber in Rome, Italy. It is a tholos - a round temple of Greek 'peripteral' design completely encircled by a colonnade. This is the absolute best piece I've ever had in my shop. It's exquisite! The details are insanely small and extremely well executed. This piece is a museum-quality stunner. Add it to your collection as is or have it set in a beautiful gold setting. They don't get any better than this beauty. The larger size is incredible along with the jam-packed tesserae. The tesserae is completely intact (tiny hand made pieces of glass tiles). Please zoom and examine all photos for detail and condition. Measures  51 mm x  41 mm. There are no cracks in the black onyx glass There are a small chip on the back side of the plaque and one extremely tiny chip on the top back edge, please see all photos for details. Neither chips show from the front. Don't miss out. Pieces that doesn't come around often.
A brief history of micro mosaic jewelry:
Micro mosaic jewelry became popular during the European Grand Tour period (17th-19th Century). Members of wealthy families would travel around Europe taking in the sights and cultures of several different countries. Italy was a very popular tourist spot as it had a long and prestigious history in arts and culture - a favorite subject in aristocratic circles. It was also a famous glass producer, and Italian craftsmen quickly turned their glass making skills to making stunning miniature micro mosaic pictures for their rich visitors. Flowers, birds and architecture were a very popular subjects. Each piece of tesserae (little hand-pulled glass tiles) was hand cut by the artist and painstakingly set in place. No two micro mosaic pieces are the same. You are buying a little piece of history that is truly a one of a kind.
