SS PETER SILVESTER WW II Liberty Ship first day cover postmarked January 27, 2019 at Kansas City, MO.This merchant cargo vessel is one of a large group of Liberty Ships named for Americans. She was launched on April 6, 1943 by North Carolina Shipbuilding in Wilmington, NC.
Blue printed cachet #1450 of the trucks on the loaded ship by Alvin Eckert, #9964 USCS. Cover franked with 29 cent merchant marine stamp # 2559h and 55 cent US flag stamp (FDOI).
SS Peter Sylvester: this proud vessel was sunk by an German submarine in the Indian Ocean about 750 miles west of Pearth, Australia on 6 February 1945. She was hit by five torpedoes and 33 men died and 142 were eventually rescued, some weeks after the sinking. (see Wikipedia web page for ship).
Peter Silvester (1734-1808) a New York City politician was elected as a congressman from New York, was a mentor to President Martin Van Buren, and grandfather of NY Representative Peter Henry Silvester. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1734, and was attorney for Sir William Johnson the British Superintendent for Indian Affairs in Albany. During the Revolutionary War he supported the patriot cause and was a member of the first and second Provisional Congresses. He was elected to Congress and served from 1789 until 1793. He died in 1808.
