SS TECUMSEH: This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was named in his honor. The vessel was launched on May 25, 1943 by the Permanente Metals Corp. in Richmond, CA. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces during WW II. The vessel also carried commercial cargo by three owners from 1946 until 1970 when her hull was recycled for scrap metal. Also see a Postal Card was issued by the USPS to honor the Fort Recovery, Ohio history and the battles that involved Chief Tecumseh.
The cover also honors Native-American Shawnee Chief Tecumseh. He was born in Ohio and founded a large village north of present-day Lafayette, Indiana. He fought against the American soldiers and they burned his site after the Battle of Tippecanoe. He joined with the British during the War of 1812. He died in 1813 fighting with the British in the Battle of Thames and afterwards his Pan-Indian alliance collapsed. His leadership is still of great pride in our nation, and he has become a folk hero.
