USAT DORCHESTER US Army Ship Memorial maritime first day cover with postmark from Liberty, MO. on June 15, 2020.Green map design printed on cachet #1372 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS.
Cover franked with a 3 cent Merchant Marine stamp on a 55 cent flag stamped envelope # U-700 (FDOI).

USAT Dorchester: This 368 foot long passenger passenger ship was built in 1926 at Newport News, VA. and was outfitted for the US Army Transport Service in 1942. The ship was sunk by enemy sub U-223 on Feb 3, 1943 while she was part of a convoy heading for a base on Greenland.
Four chaplains aboard shared their life vests with passengers and then went down with the vessel in the frigid water. The enemy submarine was reported to have been destroyed later. The art work on the stamp design #956 is quite excellent and portrays the danger and heroism shown on North Atlantic convoy voyages. Seller also has a cover that shows the sinking ship. Check out my
